Kritikus Jon Pareles dari The New York Times, mengungkap Harry masih akan menggunakan ciri khasnya dalam bermusik yang selalu optimis memicu ambiguitas lirik. Berbeda dari lagu sebelumnya, As It Was dinilai lebih terbuka untuk mengungkapkan sisi pribadinya yang emosional. Bercerita tentang rasa kesepian pelantun lagu ‘Watermelon Sugar’ ditengah puncak ketenaran. Harry disinyalir rindu bermusik bareng One Direction.
